Keep Your Pets Cool: Essential Tips for Beating the Heat

Writer: Kate JohnsonKate Johnson

When temperatures rise, it's important to remember that our furry friends feel the heat too. Dogs, cats, and other pets can struggle to stay cool in hot weather, which puts them at risk of heat stress, dehydration, and even heatstroke. Here’s how you can help keep your pet safe and comfortable when it gets warm.

Hydration is Key

Just like us, pets need plenty of fresh water to stay hydrated. Make sure your pet always has access to clean, cool water, and consider placing multiple bowls around your home and yard. For an extra cooling boost, drop a few ice cubes in their bowl or freeze a treat-filled ice block to keep them entertained and refreshed.

Shade and Shelter

If your pet spends time outdoors, ensure they have access to a shady area that provides relief from the sun. A well-ventilated kennel, a shaded patio, or a cool spot under a tree can offer much-needed protection from the heat. Remember, never leave your pet outside without adequate shelter, and always provide a cool, comfortable space indoors.

Limit Exercise in the Heat

Exercising during the hottest part of the day can quickly lead to overheating. Instead, take your dog for walks early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower. Be mindful of hot surfaces like pavement and sand, which can burn their paws—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their feet!

Cooling Strategies

Help your pet cool down with these simple strategies:

  • Provide a shallow paddling pool or let them play with a hose on low pressure.

  • Use cooling mats, wet towels, or a fan to create a comfortable resting area.

  • Some pets enjoy a light misting with water or a damp cloth on their fur.

Never Leave Pets in Cars

Even with the windows down, a parked car can become dangerously hot in minutes. Leaving a pet in a vehicle on a warm day can quickly lead to heatstroke, which can be fatal. If you’re out and about, keep your pet at home where it’s safe and cool.

Signs of Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency, and recognising the signs early can save your pet’s life. Look out for:

  • Excessive panting or drooling

  • Lethargy or weakness

  • Bright red gums

  • Vomiting or diarrhoea

  • Collapse or seizures

If you suspect your pet has heatstroke, move them to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of water, and use cool (not ice-cold) water on their body. Seek veterinary assistance as soon as possible.

Help Keep Pets Safe in Warm Weather

By taking a few simple precautions, you can help your pet stay happy and healthy when temperatures rise. Keep an eye on the heat, provide plenty of water, and always ensure they have a cool place to retreat.
